as we will most probably be able to assist you.
Bar
is a 'new town' which really started to develop in the early 1900's.
It is the railway terminus for the main line to Podgorica and onwards
into the main European rail network. The present day railway was completed
in 1976, prior to that there was a samll narrow gauge railway. It is
the main port for Montenegro. Old Bar is (Stari Bar) is situated about
3km from the existing port and is a completely different type of town,
with old stone houses clinging to the hillside, whereas the main town
of Bar is a modern town with much of it dating from the re-construction
that took place after the earthquake of 1979. The modern architecture
is mainly that of communist type apartment blocks.
As
well as being a rail terminus Bar is also the main ferry port for Montenegro
(Kotor being the other ferry port) and is thus of interest to those
who might wish to visit Montenegro via Bari or Ancona in Italy (low
cost flight destinations from the UK).
